Syrian poet Souzan Ali
Byblos
for Souzan Ali
I am from Urgite
The city that invented the alphabet
I am from the city of Latakia in Syria
On the Mediterranean Sea
Near Greece and Cyprus
My city is very beautiful, quiet and lazy
The oldest musical note was discovered in Latakia
I heard it lingering there in the port
Heralding the latest incoming ship
Harbouring the mythology of the Phoenicians
Most of the vocabulary so far is Syriac
Phoenician in origin
And this is why I bear this tatoo on my forearm
For by just looking at this script
I can see the coast and smell the wild pine and cypress trees
Blown on the sea winds along the coast
Such is the power of these letters
Such is the power of this script
My grandmother was a shepherdess
She would sing to the moon
The moon which for us is sacred
We don’t cut our hair when she is a crescent
We should only cut our hair
When the moon is full
Now I live in Berlin far from my homeland
Please don’t tar me with the same brush
