Aristophanes - new poem

Aristophanes

Ravaged, we were, torn asunder by the almighty bleakness.

Yet, we had youth, that sublime intoxicant

Pumping us full of energy that just had to find a release.

We fell together in a freefall of pure fantasy.

Those were the days and nights of milk and honey,

The Godlike ambrosia which sustained us,

Despite our empty pockets. When you have such nectar

Who needs cash? Only a fool, we both thought.

Now, the decades have rolled by with their endlessly

Repeating rhythm and you and I have been scattered

To the winds like in Aristophanes' tale.

Though, there will be no coming together, thank God!

Those dreams have been well and truly crushed,

Now that we walk about with pockets aplenty!
