EL
DESDICHADO
BY GÉRARD
DE NERVAL
1808-1855
Je suis
le ténébreux, - le veuf, - l’inconsolé,
Le prince
d’Aquitaine à la tour abolie,
Ma seule
étoile est mort – et mon luth constellé
Porte le
soleil noir de la Mélancolie.
Dans la
nuit du tombeau, toi qui m’as console,
Rends-moi

After
Gérard De Nerval
I am
the darkness, - the widow,- the unconsoled,
The
Prince of Aquitane, his tower a ruin.
My only
star is dead – and my luth is in constellation
With
the Black Sun of Melancholy.
In the
tomb of the night, you who console me,
Bring
me the Pausilypon and the Seas of Italy,
The
flower which pleases so much my broken heart,
And the
trellis where the vine and the rose conjoin.
Am I
Love or Phoebus?... Lusignon or Biron?
My
forehead still bears the imprint of the lips of the Queen;
I
dreamed in the grotto where the siren swim…
Twicefold
have I fjorded the Archeron;
Modulating,
string by string, the lyre of Orpheus,
All the
sighs of the saints, and the cries of the damned.
